MASSAGE
The word massage is derived from the Greek word meaning "to work with the hands, as in kneading dough".
The main benefits of massage are:
Relaxation: Local relaxation of the muscles can be achieved by many of the mechanical effects of massage, like increased warmth, circulation and stretching. General relaxation can occur when a large area of the body is treated.
Pain Reduction: Massage can help to reduce pain by reflexes affecting the central nervous system. It causes the release of endorphins which can reduce pain sensations in the brain.
Friction: Much of the heat derived from massage is through friction. Warming effects are beneficial as they can help increase the pliability of the tissues.
Stretching: During massage muscle fibres are stretched in all directions thereby helping to improve circulation and breaking possible adhesions between muscle bundles which cause cramp.
